As we enter the month of Shevat, the days are beginning to grow longer, and the sun may shine a bit brighter. Deep underground, the tree roots slowly wind their way toward water. Let us celebrate our own growth and learning as we plan for a future that will nurture our community.
New growth is vital to our survival, and we will need to find ways to be meaningful to younger generations in order to prosper and continue to pass on our traditions and Jewish values. We are considering affiliation with the Reconstructionist movement, and they would provide considerable support for this.
They would not require changes, and would encourage us to make democratic decisions on any changes we might consider. We have Rabbi White’s support, and we will be looking for membership support for this decision, possibly in February. I would like to schedule meetings in Benicia, Fairfield, and Napa, for members to ask questions and discuss this decision. If you can host a group meeting at your house, please contact me. Please make every effort to read the material we share with you, and participate in this process.
Our combined efforts to influence the Vallejo City Council have succeeded in preventing a resolution, but the proclamation they want is not yet ready. Stay tuned for updates, and get ready for action in Fairfield. If you can write letters to council, please check in and we will advise you when we start that process.
If we had not been involved in Common Ground, we would not have had the relationships with council to help us influence the outcome in Vallejo. If you would like to be a part of building these relationships, in Vallejo, maybe now in Fairfield, and with us in Napa, please consider participating in a Common Ground team from our synagogue. I have held the center here for 10 years, and would appreciate having a team to support me and grow with me. We could make connections similar to Vallejo with Benicia and Fairfield, and help our communities thrive.
We will be having a Common Ground Accountability Action at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in Vallejo. We will be joined by candidates for county supervisor and state senate. We will share our stories and concerns with them, and ask for a promise to work with us on our concerns, including affordable housing and public safety. Please register to attend if you are available. We need to build our relationships, give support where it is needed, and make new allies.
Help us keep our lights burning, share with each other, and remember we have strength in numbers. Am Israel Chai!
